Rajni Menon
Rajni always felt a deep sense of duty towards preserving this classical art form of India and founding NatyaVedhi was a major milestone in her artistic life. She established this group as a means to support needy Kathakali artists and promote their art form. For two years, from 2000 to 2002, NatyaVedhi planned and organized a grand program in Bangalore, introducing Kathakali to an international audience and tech enthusiasts. This three-hour performance was accompanied by commentary and demonstrations, and it garnered widespread acclaim and earned coverage in renowned newspapers and dailies.
Despite her demanding role as a Compliance Program Manager at IBM US for over a decade and her responsibilities as a wife and mother, Rajni continues her Kathakali journey. Currently receiving training from the promising artist from Kalamandalam who is actively researching the art form at Kerala Kalamandalam, Rajni remains committed to fostering Kathakali's global recognition. With Natyavedi Kathakali Art Organization, she aims to contribute to the appreciation of Kathakali in the Western world, bridging cultures through this captivating traditional art form.
In 2023 alone, she showcased her talent in 10 solo and group performances, collaborating with Kathakali professionals in diverse locations across the USA and India. This adds to her extensive portfolio, which includes numerous performances over the years, including appearances at several universities in the USA.
My Story
Rajni Menon's journey into the enchanting realm of Kathakali, the classical art form from Kerala, India, began in her early childhood, guided by her parents. Influenced by her mother, an amateur Kathakali artist, and her great uncle, the renowned 'Panchali Govindankutty Menon,' whose artistic lineage includes disciples like the late Kottakkal Chandrashekhara Warrier, Rajni developed a profound interest in this traditional art form.
Growing up in a family deeply immersed in the world of art, Rajni had the privilege of witnessing Kathakali performances and learning from accomplished artists. Commencing formal training at the age of 9, she dedicated over 12 years to mastering Kathakali under the tutelage of Sri. Late Kalamandalam Gopalakrishnan. Notably, Rajni trained in both male and female characters, showcasing her versatility on various stages, also participated as a child artist in programs where esteemed Kathakali artists and maestros such as Padmashri Kizhpadam Kumaran Nair and Padmabhooshan Kalamandalam Ramankutty Nair performed.
Her early achievements include winning prizes in Kathakali at the Kerala State Youth Festival and university-level competitions from 1987 to 1993. In 1987, she received the prestigious "Pattikamthodi smaraka" award, acknowledging her dedication and talent in Kathakali. Below are a few snapshots capturing moments from her recognitions.
